This thread is an idea from me, to add content to the PvP scene in FFXIV Gil.
A long time ago, some time ago actually, I played an MMO. Can’t mention the name here but that MMO, to me, has an almost perfect balance between PvE and PvP.
They would hold a tournament, Colosseum or Arena, in a certain periods of time. Colosseum would be held 4 times per day, while Arena 8 times per day. Both of them keeps interchanging with each other.
I wasn’t very good at PvP, still isn’t. But what attracted me to PvP in that game was the idea of “Power Rank.” Each person would hold a power rank, so similar power ranks (or +-1) would be grouped together, teleported to an arena, gets locked in for a duration of 5 to 10 minues and try to kill each other. If you win, you would sit there until the timer runs out and then be paired with other winners of your power level and the fight continues. The duration of the whole event goes from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on how long the players fight (if you win early, you can go out early. If the timer runs out, a point system would determine the winner.)
The difference between Colosseum and Arena was that Colosseum will synced your team down to a certain level, and then it all depends on your skill and strategy. My favourite kind of PvP. Arena takes your gear into account though but generates less reward (because of gear differences in players).
While FFXIV is a much faster MMO Game than that game, I think this type of system would be good to be implemented. It could be team based, or solo, depends on SE’s team. But what I would like to see is the timing implementation of PvP events, and Power Rank. Each day, a certain kind of PvP event would occur, players can sign up and at the end of the duration, they will commence the event. Each event wouldn’t take that much time, so even casuals can sign up and have fun for the heck of it. Power ranks determine which Rank you are, and how “pro” you are in the scene but you are also fighting against players who are as “pro” as you are.
What gets me away from the current PvP scene is not the gear, not the queue times, not the battle system but the lack of progression. Even if you are uber powered, you will still be fighting the same weak players over and over again. There is no challenge and it deters newcomers away.
